U.S. Coins 1938-2003 Jefferson

This nickel was originally designed by Felix Schlag, who won an award of $1,000 in a competition with some 390 artists. His design established  the definite public approval of portrait and pictorial themes rather than symbolic devices on our coinage.

Monticello is the primary plantation of Thomas Jefferson, who, after inheriting quite a large amount of land from his father, started building Monticello when he was twenty-six years old. Located just outside Charlottesville, Virginia in the Piedmont region.
