Even in the XII century on the site of the present cathedral's was a wooden church of the Archangel Michael. The first white stone church of the Archangel Michael was built by Ivan Kalita in 1333 in memory of the deliverance from the "plague epidemic" (plague). In the same church, in 1340, Ivan Kalita later and was buried.
