District of Columbia is U.S. Federal District, selected in 1791 from the Maryland area for the future of the U.S. capital - Washington, DC. It's area is 0.2 km2. Located on the left bank of the Potomac river between Virginia and Maryland.
Since 1878 the boundaries of the district are also the municipal boundaries of Washington, DC, where the April 29, 1899 was born the legendary Edward Kennedy ("Duke") Ellington - pianist, arranger, composer, bandleader, the experimenter and innovator of jazz art. His original orchestral works had a great aesthetic impact on the development of a culture of 20th century. Duke Ellington has one of the first places in duration of time of sounding on the radio, on television and on the disks in the entire world.
The reverse depicts Duke Ellington, at the piano. The coin also contains the inscription "Duke Ellington" and "Justice for All".
