Many of the revolutionary war leaders had fought against the Indians during the French and Indian War. With these new treaties they hoped to neutralize the Indian's alliances with the King of England.
Many tribes, including the Cherokee, signed treaties of friendship with the new government prior to the U.S. Constitution being ratified by the states.
